The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were agreed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015 and are intended to be achieved by 2030.
The SDGs are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet for now and into the future.
Should you be looking to develop your company’s social purpose, you need look no further than the UN SDGs.
It is important that whatever social purpose is chosen has some relevance to the company’s services, that is material and where the company has the most experience. To this end, you may wish to consider the UN Sustainability Goals, in focus groups, to agree which of the 17 goals seems the most relevant to the company (there may be others options) and to discuss the link between the commercial purpose of your company and the its purpose.
It is important to involve employees as much as possible in the discussions. When employees have helped shape purpose,
they will feel ownership of it.
